Steph Shaw
Steph is a willow basketmaker based in Leominster. She specialises in making functional yet beautiful baskets and other woven creations. From traditional log baskets and shopping trolleys, to willow coffins and urns. Each piece is thoughtfully designed and created to combine practicality with care and sensitivity.
Steph is committed to using locally sourced, natural materials in all of her work, in order to be as environmentally friendly as possible. She grows 28 varieties of willow on the family farm, which travels less than a mile from field to workshop.
Artist’s Statement
I am a qualified primary school teacher but I left the teaching profession in 2017 to cycle the length of South America, finishing two years later in Canada. The pandemic halted travel plans and in May 2022 I ‘had a go’ at basket weaving. Since then I’ve been hooked!
In June 2023 I completed the Level 2 City & Guilds in Basketry at Westhope College in Shropshire, finishing with a Distinction. Since then I have attended numerous workshops with other basketmakers from the UK and abroad to develop my skills and learn new techniques.
Alongside my business making bespoke willow coffins, I really enjoy designing and making baskets in all shapes and sizes. It is always such a joy to be commissioned to make something special, or weaving unique pieces to be sold in a gallery. I love the learning process, of finding new ways to do things, and I enjoy the challenge of making something a bit different!
