Caroline Barnett - Sculpture
Caroline grew up on a farm in the Cotswolds, where she developed a deep love of nature and the subtle shapes and curves of living things. Expressing this through art was a natural development. Prior to becoming a sculptor, Caroline read law at Cambridge before qualifying as a solicitor, and subsequently travelling with her diplomat husband whilst bringing up their two children.
Returning to the Cotswolds, she began sculpting professionally in 2001. Initially specialising in ceramics, she now produces limited editions either in foundry bronze, or in bronze, stone or iron resin, alongside her ceramic sculpture.
Caroline’s work seeks to express inner character within the outer form. She is endlessly fascinated by the way thought and instinct are expressed externally, particularly in moments of intense concentration, whether in movement or stillness.
She works in clay because it feels right under her hands; which have the desire to build up shapes and textures rather than to carve away.
“I love the rhythms and processes of working with clay, and the freedom it gives to choose the final material. The finished piece may be in bronze, or a stone resin, or it can be a fired ceramic. Each material has its own language and physicality with an important role to play in my interpretation of life and form.”
Caroline is a member of the Oxford Sculptors Group, and of the Gallery at the Guild co-operative in Chipping Campden. Her works are held in private collections in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Republic of Ireland and the USA, as well as throughout the UK.
